The beach is a favorite summer destination. This is a photo of me and my older brother and my dad at Haystack Rock. Haystack Rock is a 235-foot sea stack in Cannon Beach, Oregon.
Did you know that in Oregon you can drive your car on the beach? I found this to be crazy – it is not allowed everywhere, but apparently in 1970 it was allowed on Cannon Beach! And, with that said, I should also point out that in this photo is our Chevy Station Wagon! What the What. Why is our car on the beach? It makes me ask so many questions, was it a drive by vacation, were we being lazy, were we told to ‘get out and smile’ we do have a somewhat strained look on our face. The speculation could go on and on.
I could not stop laughing at the irony in this photo. This is like a drive thru option of going to the beach. A quick photo to say we were there and then hurry to the next place. I am sure that is not what happened but the captions assigned to this photo could be quite humorous. I almost wish I could create a now-and-then photo of this idea – except with my kids and our version of the station wagon – the minivan. Don’t get me wrong I know all the reasons that would be so wrong, but the photo would be great a keeper and the stories endless. My kids would actually probably get a real kick out if it – in fact I better not even suggest it.
OK – enough on this topic. Bottom line, photos like this are a classic. The enjoyment I got out of this photo far exceeds the photographers intentions – and that is where the beauty lies. Every photo has a story and what you make of it is up to you. Go dig through your photos from the 70’s or 80’s – you might be surprised by what you learn.
